Well, the AGM offered much of what I expected, anyone thinking otherwise is either a supreme optimist, or indeed a supreme pessimist.

It is what it is, and as long as we keep ourselves to ourselves, it isn't going to matter too much.

The thing about our Berwick operation is that regardless of what half-a-dozen people – very few more, really – shout about on the Forum, what we offer is an entertaining Saturday night out for the solid citizenry of Tweedside.

A high proportion of our regular attendees don’t really give a flying flip about what averages our riders are on, or how they perform at Eastbourne.

They want to be entertained at Shielfield on a Saturday, and gradually, over the past couple of seasons, there has been a slow-building sense that this is what’s happening.

The promotion try to keep faith with their riders as well as their public, and can be relied upon to slowly but steadily improve their product.

No-one who attended the double-header that closed last season (except maybe Edinburgh fans) could have felt dissatisfied with what was on offer that night.

I could be wrong, but I don’t even think the regular hyper-critics who watched that entertaining production found too much to moan about after the event.

Let’s hope we can build on that night’s show, and give you a few more like it in 2020.

Meanwhile, as 2019 closes, I find myself in Australia, as readers of Speedway Star magazine will be aware.

Although they haven’t reached any of the places I’ve been going to, there have been – as you’ll know from the news, if they can get a word in that isn’t about the election or Brexit – quite a few big bushfires burning in parts of New South Wales and Queensland.

Volunteers are being drafted in to bolster the local firefighting forces, making me wonder if they should enquire about the availability of our now-retiring skipper Kevin Doolan – currently training as a fireman in Berwick, as we know – to come over to help the cause.

Sort of an open booking, if you see what I mean…..

Unaffected in Melbourne by the fires, my modus operandi is that I lie by my mate’s pool during the week, sipping his wine and feeling toasty, and each weekend I take myself off to a speedway meeting somewhere on this big island.

So far I’ve been to Undera, Broadford and Mildura – this coming weekend I’ll be jetting up to Queensland to watch the show at North Brisbane, a track I’ve not previously visited.

Now, on the subject of open bookings, I have just taken a call from Joel Eaton, the main man up at North Brisbane, asking if I was indeed bound his way this weekend for the Queensland state title meeting.

Seems they need a ‘different’ voice to augment their presentation team at the Mick Doohan Raceway (named for the 5-time MotoGP champ, who comes from that area) on Saturday, and would I be able to help?

Well, yes. Never tired of talking, you know me. It seems Joel has been told about “this guy who fronts the show at Berwick” …..

So yes, to the delight of any ex-pats originating from Edinburgh, Newcastle or Workington who might be there, I’ll be picking up the old radio mike again, ready to pass on wit’n’wisdom to the masses.

I only hope they’ve got the right guy for the job – maybe they think they’ve hired Ranting Roy!
